Art is surrounding us, it's everywhere if you walk with open eyes. You can see it in the nature, like how the clouds are moving or how the sun enjoys his ride through the sky. And humans... oh they can do so many beautiful things, they can express their emotions, let out their anger, show what's important.

As you know the quote the Earth without art is only an eh, but luckily there is art, and also happiness and the process of the creativity. And now, here is a little interview to celebrate this brand new project in Budapest, Wild Art Exhibition. Please enjoy the interview with Dervla O'Flaherty. Check out her website here and visit the Exhibition's Facebook page here.

  • LifeLightsmag (LLm): Welcome! You are a truly talented artist from Ireland who is currently living in Hungary. Please tell us a little bit about your art and how did you end up in Budapest?

Dervla O'Flaherty (DO'F): Thank you for your kind words! Well the general theme of my work is exploring ideas of identy, place and the unknown. It became necessary for my practice to take projects abroad and move out of my comfort zone. I came to Hungary to do a 2 month project in 2015 and instantly fell in love with the place. After just a few days I was beginning to imagine myself living here. As this feeling didn’t leave me even after doing some further projects in other countries, I decided to move here a year ago.

  • LLm: I basically saw your art in an apartment, better to say in a project called Wild art exhibition, tell us how this idea was born. How did you find the location for it? And how many people are working on this project?

DO'F: The idea came about from discussions between myself and the 2 other organisers Vivien René and Orsi Varga. Our idea was to create an exhibition more akin to a party in artist studios or art colleges where music, food, drink, discussions and debates take place in a very lively and creative atmosphere among a variety of finished and half-finished artworks and ideas from emerging and more established artists. In this way there is no distinct message, we just want to inspire and connect as many creative types in Budapest as much as we can. That’s why we made the decision it should be a one night only event without any possibity to visit afterwards at a quiet time like in a regular gallery.

Our friend had just bought this apartment in Nepszinhaz utca which was waiting to be totally renovated. As the work was delayed for over a month, he kindly offered us the space to put on the event and the freedom to do whatever we wanted there which was a dream opportunity for us.

We started organising the show just 3-4 weeks before it opened. We contacted any artist we had met in Budapest to see if they were up for trying something a bit different and to spread the word to any interesting artists they knew.. we were lucky and quickly became connected with some really talented people in Budapest.

  • LLm: How did you become an artist? Was there any event that helped you choose this path?

DO'F: Somewhere around 1999 my grandmother brought me to see the studio of Irish born painter Francis Bacon when it was re-located to the Hugh Lane Gallery in Dublin. As a child I was always drawing, painting and telling people I was going to be an artist. My gran often brought me on day trips to see galleries and exhibitions but this visit was one that sent a shock to my system. It stopped me in my tracks. Peering wide-eyed through the chaos of Bacons studio, among the paint strewn walls and floor, the scattered objects and cut up photos, the thick expressive visceral strokes of his dislocated bodies and screaming popes, I saw for the first time that art could be something more than skilfully or beautifully reproducing objects and scenes; art could be raw and shocking, pumping and fluid, emotional and aggressive, bloody, bodily and beautiful; a terrible beauty. Through his work I began to see the artist as an experimenter, pushing boundaries and pouring out emotion, ideas and aggression with paint. I was thrilled.

From here I set to work with a new licence and a new understanding of art as a vehicle for pure imagination, frustration, sexuality and struggle. I started keeping secret scribbled notebooks and pushing feelings into pictures and poetry. This way of recording and expressing everyday emotions thoughts and ideas has become an integral part of visual language I use as a jumping off point to create artwork.

  • LLm: Among your works, which one is your favorite? Why?

DO'F: The relationship I have with my artwork is usually a bit tempestuous and moody – sort of like a lover that you can’t live with and can’t live without! There are always 1 or 2 pieces that stand out as marking points in my progression as an artist. A mixed media piece from last year ’Dark Sky Status’ is an important piece for me as it began a new direction in my work by combining woodwork and carving with oil painting towards what I’ve come to define as ’mapmaking’ work. It’s a direction I’m still exploring.

  • LLm: You are planning the next Exhibition in Budapest (Facebook event link here). Tell us a little bit about the upcoming event.

DO'F: We plan to continue the Vad Art Kiállítás series and looking forward to making each event unique and wilder than the last. Our next event is on October 20th and it’s on in at Szív utca 32. Our idea is that each event will be on in a different location in Budapest with a different ‘flavour’ – the next one will incorporate a lot more performance, music, dance and storytelling as well as a variety of visual artists with all new work. Hope to see you all there!

Thank you!

Thank you Dervla for the interview!

Happy October my beauties!

How quickly this year is passing by? Isn't it crazy?
I'm happy to read all your October goals and date ideas posts.
They just help me to feel motivated and a little bit romantic.
Usually I hide this kind of details about me very deeply, don't get me wrong I'm happy to express my feelings, but usually I'm a very sarcastic person.
All this thoughts about Autumn, cozy jumpers, cold nights with hot drinks, holding hands and definitely jumping into leaves are more than fun.
I just need my favourite people to enjoy these things.
...
If I can give you one advice: don't surround yourself with negative people.
They will make a strained atmosphere and all you gonna do is feeling unhappy and very tired.
Sometimes it's really hard to find peace, and it's more difficult to let go, but for your own heart you should do it.
You can read a beautifully written article about letting go on my online magazine: LifeLights Magazine.

Take care!

Nowadays there is so much hate on the Earth and when you see something magical you stop a little and wonder how it could be so beautiful. When I first saw the Notebook inspired photos I needed to show them around, because they looked so real and so gorgeous. These pictures can bring back your faith in real love, because unfortunately our relationships are sometimes more real in the online world, than in the actual life. Every love story has its own difficulties and own fairytale times. Loving each other for 57 years has probably many memorable moments and it's still counting.

Please enjoy the interview with the Notebook-inspired love photographer - Mary Evelyn Photography by Stacy Welch-Christ. Check out her work on her Facebook and Instagram accounts.

  • LifeLightsmag (LLm): Welcome! Everyone saw the result of the Notebook inspired photoshoot. Did you think it would get such a lovely and obviously huge feedback?

Stacy Welch-Christ (SWC): The feedback from the Notebook inspired shoot was totally a shock and surprise. We did the shoot for family and were hoping they would love it and cherish it, so seeing the whole world respond to it the way they did was so inspiring.

  • LLm: Tell us a little bit about your experience on that photoshoot. For many people it has a great message about true love, as it looks like you’ve just captured the endless love.

SWC: The photo shoot was memorable. They were so natural in their love and the way they showed it and each moment we captured was authentic. You could see and feel how much they loved each other. It was one of the sweetest moments to be a part of and I'll forever cherish that they allowed me to do it.

  • LLm: How has this photoshoot influenced your career?

SWC: As far as how the photoshoot has influenced my career....well, I am a deep hearted person, so my wish would be to have a shoot like this every single day. I think having this happen has helped me realize that it's okay to take a moment in the midst of the shoots I do every day and do a shoot that inspires people. I think I realized that even though I'm just a regular person in this world, there is always something we can do at any job to move people to be better or to remind them of what is important. Each little influence can make a difference.

  • LLm: What is your next project?

SWC: I do have another project in the works and it's very special. I don't want to say yet, but I'll try to remember to share it with you when it happens. In between though, I'll just be capturing moments from the family, children and senior shoots that I do.

  • LLm: What is your message, what do you want to say with your photographs?

SWC: I think the message that I want to say with my photographs differs from shoot to shoot, but mainly, I want to capture them authentically as they are and show as much love as I can through each photo. I think sometimes in this world we start running and forget to stop and enjoy the simple things. When we do a shoot, we (my husband and I) try to make it fun and enjoyable and encourage them to just love on each other.....to just be the best of themselves in that moment, so when they look at the photos, it's almost a reminder to remember how they felt in that moment and to apply that to every day.

  • LLm: Tell us one thing from your bucket list, what you’ve already done and one which is your biggest dream to achieve.

SWC: My bucket list is really simple these days. I think when you are young, you have all of these things that you want to do for you and for me right in this moment, I don't want anything for myself. I really do wish to just be a good person and for that to simply be my goal or my check off of my list. This viral shoot wasn't even on my list....haha....and it happened because of the authenticity of what I try to do in my life and because capturing those two sweet people and their love had an impact. So I would say that my bucket lists consists of being the person God created me to be, being a good person and continuing to capture moments.....and if that creates something else super special for someone, then my goal has been met. Really, there is not a thing that makes me happier than seeing how happy people are when they see their photos or videos that we have created. There is so much goodness all around us and it just takes us taking a moment to capture it in our hearts.

Thank you.

Thank you Stacy for the interview!
