Dear beautiful souls,

Welcome back to the fourth part of our series on the blog: 'Journeys Unfolded: 5 Questions & 5 Facts.' If you've been following along, you know that each segment introduces us to inspiring individuals (you can find part one, two, three here) who radiate authenticity and positivity. Today, we're happy to continue this journey with yet another remarkable guest.

Say hello to Josh, the passionate wildlife advocate and content creator with a heart for our furry friends. Hailing from Australia, Josh's vibrant Instagram presence with 515,000 followers showcases his dedication to wildlife rescue and rehabilitation. Alongside his wife and daughter, Josh's family journey plays a significant role in his content, highlighting the importance of conservation efforts for future generations. Through his posts and heartfelt mission, Josh spreads awareness and compassion for Australian wildlife. Let's dive into his story and discover the true depth of his commitment to our animal companions. You can find him on Instagram, on Tiktok and learn more about his work and how to support wildlife rescue efforts on his website and online shop.

1. question: What made you decide to share your and  your family's experiences with Australian wildlife on Instagram? How do people respond to your posts about wildlife and family life?
Josh: I have been doing the wildlife for a number of years however I started using Snapchat within my local friends group and I started to consistently get requests to start a YouTube channel or TikTok because the locals absolutely loved the content and my attitude towards life and wanted to be able to share my antics with their friends. So I started a TikTok but soon got banned and removed (TikTok is very harsh) I did not know why other than I had to many community guidelines violations.. and due to how hard it is to get feedback was unable to obtain what I did to receive these violations.. later on I learned it was to do with Ashlee and certain wildlife like snakes and koalas that they deemed dangerous and said I was endearing her life.. so that put a sour taste in my mouth about the platform, so I did not worry about it after that.. it was only when Insta started its reels section that I started uploading snippets of our ventures and then it was onward and upwards from their on. I then started another TikTok and it exploded now with 550k followers, however I don’t really put any time or interaction back into the account because I would rather put all my efforts and communication into Instagram they are so much more versatile and secure.. with how sensitive TikTok is I could once again have it removed without feedback or warning so it’s hard to want to put to much effort into that space..
When I first started out there was a level of negativity in certain areas, but now it’s mostly 99% good vibes, love and support from the community it’s really a good space.. which is very uncommon on the internet today.

2. question: Wildlife rescue can be tough. How do you and your family handle the challenges, like taking care of injured animals or raising funds?
Josh: Myself and Amber work full time and it’s all self funded the wildlife rehabilitation space so it costs us a considerable amount of money. However we have lately been getting donations and selling merchandise that really does help..  the time, effort and skill it takes to care for these critters is very mentally and physically tuff. Multiple feeds in the middle of the night, sick, injured and stressed animals require so much attention, but that’s why we do it as a family we all chip in and take turns to share the load even Ashlee ❤️❤️

3. question: Can you share a happy moment from your wildlife rescue efforts? What's one success story that you're especially proud of?
Josh: I think one of the best was Amber raising two little rainbow larukeets 🦜 that had no feathers 🪶 and were rescued after a tree was cut down. They were so tiny and she put so much time and effort to get them to strong healthy birds that eventually took off with a local flock on the farm..that whole journey was pretty special.

4. question: Your brand supports wildlife rescue with its sales. Can you tell us more about where the proceeds go and how people's support helps?
Josh: Yeah onya apparel all goes back into building infrastructure on the farm like wombat pens ect, also maintaining the current infrastructure and also buying feed and equipment that we use to facilitate these critters on their journeys with us back to good health and then the wild.. also medical treatment is funded out of our pockets so all this definitely helps.
@fezferretson

Well it’s happening we have finally organised some merchandise for all you supporters of our venture in the animal and wildlife space this is a way to help contribute to what we are about. We have started a company called ONYA APPAREL and we have a website kicking off on Wednesday 8th of November ONYAAPPAREL.shop where there will be a presale on all the range of shirts and hoodies for men, women and kids. We are supporting a local company that provides a very high quality product, this is a way to help us out as well as deck you legends out in some awesome gear. There will be four colours and all sizes available. The international shipping is a bit steep in my eyes however auspost has the monopoly and I can’t find away around it☹️, however it’s the same price for shipping one item or ten so buy up and save. There has been a-lot of work and logistics that has gone into making this possible with some really great people like @rodneylovedesign for the designs and the @thecolourcartel for the printing and logistics 🫶🏻 ..now this is a presale for 10 days so you will get your shirts legends they just might take a week or two to turn up but I promise we won’t let you down . This has all been a wild ride for this little country family to figure out but we look forward seeing you guys in your new kit showing your support and we can’t thank you guys enough for it ❤️❤️🫶🏻ONYA!

5. question: With so many followers, how do you use your Instagram to help wildlife? What's the most important thing you want people to know about protecting Australian wildlife?
Josh: To be honest we love that we have made it kid friendly and provides educational aspects with a bit of Aussie humour, we also like to be transparent and show not just the warm and fuzzy stuff but also a few of the hardships that come alone, also that it brings a lot of happiness for people with mental health or that are just struggling we get a lot of great feedback in that space.. I like to think we are stimulating generational change and development towards certain species like snakes and wombats which tend to get a very negative reputation in our area..
@fezferretson

Kissing kangaroos was great way to start the morning when your on holidays… 😂

As we conclude Josh's chapter in 'Journeys Unfolded: 5 Questions & 5 Facts,' we've had the privilege of witnessing the incredible impact of his work and the depth of his passion for wildlife conservation. Thank you, Josh, for sharing your inspiring journey with us and for reminding us of the importance of protecting and cherishing our wildlife.  Dear beautiful souls,

In a world dominated by fast fashion, sustainability often falls by the wayside. However, thrifting represents a quiet revolution in the fashion landscape, offering more than just a trend. It's a lifestyle choice that champions sustainability while fostering individuality and creativity. Join me to explore the world of thrifting and eco-friendly fashion, celebrating its positive impact on our planet.

Shoes and jeans were thrifted from Vinnies (Australia)

Fast fashion has revolutionized the clothing industry, offering cheap, trendy garments at a rapid turnover rate. However, this convenience comes at a significant cost to the environment. From the extensive use of water in production to the pollution caused by textile dyes and the mountains of clothing waste ending up in landfills, the environmental impact of fast fashion is undeniable.

One of the solutions is thrifting. It provides a sustainable alternative to the fast fashion cycle. By purchasing pre-loved clothing items, you're extending the lifespan of garments and reducing the demand for new production. This helps decrease the carbon footprint associated with clothing manufacturing and minimizes the amount of textile waste entering landfills.

One of the joys of thrifting is the treasure hunt aspect – you never know what unique pieces you might discover. Thrift stores offer a diverse range of styles from different eras, allowing individuals to curate a wardrobe that reflects their personality and sense of style. Embracing second-hand clothing encourages creativity in fashion, as you mix and match pieces to create distinctive looks that can't be found on the racks of mainstream stores.

Tips for trifting:
  • Shop with intent: before heading to the thrift store, take stock of your wardrobe and identify items you genuinely need or want to replace.
  • Quality check: inspect clothes for signs of wear and tear, ensuring they're in good condition before purchasing.
  • Be open minded: keep an open mind while browsing and don't be afraid to experiment with styles or sizes you wouldn't typically consider.
  • Donate and recycle: extend the lifecycle of your own clothing by donating items you no longer wear or repurposing them into new creations.

----------------------------------

Oops, I did it again: embracing imperfection

Okay, let's get real for a moment. As much as I try to stick to thrifting and green alternatives, I'll admit that I sometimes cave and buy something new. But here's the thing – every little effort counts! So, if you slip up and splurge on that cute top you couldn't resist, don't beat yourself up about it. We're all on this journey together, and it's the small steps that make a big difference.
I believe in celebrating wins, no matter how small. Whether it's choosing to thrift instead of hitting up the mall or mending a beloved pair of jeans instead of tossing them out, every eco-friendly choice deserves a high-five.

----------------------------------

Sun out and in makes so much difference.

Thrifting isn't just about snagging a bargain – it's a conscious choice to support sustainability in fashion and reduce our environmental impact. By embracing second-hand shopping and prioritizing quality over quantity, we can build a wardrobe that not only looks good but also feels good, knowing that we're contributing to a greener, more sustainable future. So, the next time you're in need of a style refresh, consider taking a trip to your local thrift store – you might just find your new favorite wardrobe staple while helping to save the planet, one outfit at a time.

What tips do you have for others looking to embrace thrifting and sustainable fashion? And, what's your favorite thrifted find? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Dear beautiful souls,

A few months ago, I found myself on a mission to surprise my boyfriend (and myself :D) with a gift that would truly capture the essence of our journey together. Little did I know that my search would lead me straight to the world of Exchange Life.

Exchange Life gifts are like little magic beans for anyone with multiple homes or dancing through the rhythm of a long-distance relationship. They aren't just pieces; they're symbols of shared experiences and unbreakable bonds.

Exchange Life was born out of a transformative experience in the United States in November 2019. The founder, inspired by the impact of living in another country, sought to capture those memories and feelings. The result? Personalized Exchange Life items that resonate not only with those on exchange but also with anyone who has two homes, be it international students, expats, or those in long-distance relationships. Exchange Life doesn't just craft gifts; they curate love stories. Each creation is infused with genuine affection, shipped from locations around the globe. It's not merely about gifting; it's the art of turning fleeting moments into enduring memories.

As someone who was once an exchange student, navigating different countries and living in various corners of the world, I know the profound feeling when "home" takes on a special meaning. Moving somewhere new can be both exhilarating and challenging, but amidst the changes, certain places become more than just locations — they become a part of your soul. So, with that heartfelt understanding, I couldn't resist but go all out – I got the long distance engraved necklace (for myself) and the adjustable bracelet (for my boyfriend).

@wxyand #expat #echangestudent #longdistance #exchangelife #australia @Exchange Student Community ♬ Little Life - Cordelia

The products I snagged are more than just pieces of jewelry. They are tiny maps of our love, with Australia and Hungary playing a leading role. And that discreet date on the back? It's our special day, forever etched in gold and silver.

1. Long distance engraved necklace:
  • Material: The necklace is 44-49cm long, adjustable, and the engraved pendant is 15mm. It's made with high-quality 316L stainless steel, plated in real 18k gold.
  • Customization: Exchange Life allows you to choose the countries to engrave on your necklace — your personal love story in wearable form. Additionally, the back can be customized with a quote, a special date, or any other sentimental message.
  • Durability: It will never fade or lose its color, even when exposed to sweat and heat, in the shower, sea, or pool, ensuring your memories will last forever.

2. Adjustable bracelet:
  • Material: The bracelet is 14.5-20.5cm long, adjustable, and the engraved pendant is 15mm. It's  made with high-quality 316L Stainless steel and the rest is rope.
  • Customization: Similar to the necklace, the bracelet is customizable with the countries of your choice. The back offers the perfect canvas for a meaningful quote, a special date, or any other personal touch.
  • Durability: Just like the necklace, it will never fade or lose its color, even in the face of sweat, heat, or water, making sure your memories endure.

As the saying goes, "Home is where the heart is," and in the realm of Exchange Life, distance means nothing when your second home means so much. So, if you're on the hunt for a gift that whispers sentiment, check out Exchange Life. Trust me, your memories will thank you.

Dear beautiful souls,

As 2023 bowed out, we thought we'd spice up our New Year's Eve with a spontaneous road trip. Little did we know, this last-minute decision would unfold into a Sorrento visit filled with unexpected twists, waves of laughter, and the most crystal-clear waters I've ever seen in Australia.

To reach Sorrento, we opted for the ferry with Searoad Ferries, navigating through Queenscliff Harbour, the picturesque town of Queenscliff, and the delightful village of Sorrento. You can access more information about the ferry here.
But let's talk about the prices first: the return ticket price for the ferry stands at $32.00 for an adult, easily accessible online with some discount. You can buy the ticket here for foot passengers.

With tickets in hand, our journey began in Queenscliff, where the ferry set sail for Sorrento. This seaside village welcomed us with its eclectic charm and panoramic views. The historic buildings, adorned with cafes, art galleries, and shops, created a captivating blend of old-world charm and modern allure. Queenscliff Harbour added its touch to the scene, with the observation tower providing a stunning 360-degree view, allowing us to immerse ourselves in the coastal tales that unfolded around us.

After enjoying the panoramic views, we hopped on the ferry, choosing to brave the winds on the top deck. The breeze was invigorating as we sailed, and despite the gusts, the sunny weather made the outdoor experience perfect. Arriving in Sorrento, it was like stepping into a coastal dream.

A Glimpse into Sorrento's Past
Sorrento's history is intricately woven into the fabric of Australia's exploration. When the area opened for housing development in 1869, the name 'Sorrento,' borrowed from the Italian seaside town, was bestowed upon what was initially known as Sullivans Bay. Long before European settlers arrived, the Boonwurrung people, custodians of the Mornington Peninsula, called Sorrento's land Bullanatoolong.

As we prepared to leave Sorrento, we longed for a beachside dinner. However, timing not played our hand, and the restaurant's kitchen only opened at 5 pm, just after we left for the ferry. Classic, right? Yet, the crystal-clear waters of Sorrento painted a serene backdrop, bidding us a fitting farewell to our maritime adventure.

But the adventure wasn't done with us. After the ferry ride and Sorrento's charm, our car decided to remind us of its existence... New Year's plans were in disarray, so, with no grand fireworks or fancy dinners, we welcomed 2024 at home.

So, if you're seeking a scenic escape, consider Searoad Ferries for a voyage that connects the charming towns of Sorrento and Queenscliff. Here's to more spontaneous adventures and laughter in 2024! 🌊🎉

Dear beautiful souls,

Today, I'm thrilled to take you on an exciting journey along the Great Ocean Road, as we explore the breathtaking beauty of the 12 Apostles and make a stop at the charming Aireys Inlet lighthouse. Get ready for an unforgettable road trip filled with stunning landscapes, fascinating history, and a touch of serendipity. Buckle up and let's embark on an adventure you won't want to miss!

Leaving the hustle and bustle of Melbourne behind, we hit the road on our Great Ocean Road adventure. With approximately ~ 280km of scenic coastal drive ahead, we can't help but wonder about the fascinating twists and turns that await us. How many unique viewpoints will we discover along the way? Will we encounter any local wildlife?

The first stop of our journey is at the historic Aireys Inlet lighthouse. This picturesque coastal gem has guided countless ships to safety since its construction in the end of the 18th century. As we explore the lighthouse grounds, we can't help but appreciate the panoramic views of the rugged coastline. As someone who has no idea about any Australian TV series my boyfriend highlighted it to me, that this lighthouse played a cameo role in a popular Australian children's television series "Round the Twist" in the nineties.

As we wind our way along the Great Ocean Road, we're treated to a visual feast of natural wonders. The magnificent 12 Apostles steal the show with their towering limestone formations rising majestically from the Southern Ocean. These iconic rock stacks, shaped by millions of years of erosion, offer an awe-inspiring spectacle. Did you know that the 12 Apostles were originally known as the Sow and Pigs? Over time, erosion and collapses have reduced the number of stacks, and currently, there are fewer than twelve remaining. Each visit to this remarkable site presents a unique experience, as the ocean and weather continue to shape and transform these formations.

During the whole day the weather played a whimsical game of hide-and-seek between rain and sunshine. The alternating showers and rays of sunlight created a surreal atmosphere, painting the landscape with an ethereal glow. And oh, the rainbows! Lot's of them, even some double ones.
@wxyand #australia #victoria #greatoceanroad #12apostles #sunset ♬ Down Under
But it wasn't just the weather that blessed us with its charm. Along the road, we were fortunate enough to encounter a delightful array of Australian wildlife. As we drove past lush fields and open pastures, kangaroos gracefully hopped alongside the road. We spotted some alpacas too alongside the sheep, cows, and horses that dotted the landscape. It was a symphony of nature's creatures, a harmonious coexistence of different species that added an extra layer of wonder to our journey.

The rain and sunshine, the kangaroos and alpacas, the sheep, cows, and horses – all came together to create a magical experience along the road to the 12 Apostles. It was a reminder that beauty can be found not only in iconic landmarks but also in the simple moments of connection with the natural world. The 12 Apostles and Aireys Inlet have shown us just a glimpse of the wonders this remarkable region holds. Remember, the beauty of travel lies not only in the destinations we visit but also in the unexpected twists and surprises that unfold along the journey. So, grab your map, plan your route, and get ready to embrace the Great Ocean Road's twists and turns.

Dear beautiful souls,

After visiting the Moonlit Sanctuary Wildlife Conservation Park (see my last post about it), you'll be happy to know that there's another great destination just a short distance away. Frankston Beach, located only a 30-minute drive from the sanctuary, is a stunning beach destination that offers visitors the chance to soak up the sun, swim in crystal-clear waters, and enjoy delicious food and drinks at nearby restaurants.

Upon arrival, visitors will be greeted by pristine white sand and clear blue waters, making for a picturesque setting. The beach is perfect for a day of relaxation, with plenty of space to sunbathe or take a dip in the refreshing water. And with its close proximity to the city center, it's a convenient escape from the hustle and bustle of Melbourne.

One of the best places to grab a bite to eat and a refreshing drink is the Iron and River Bar, located near to the beachfront. During happy hour, visitors can take advantage of great deals on cocktails, beers, and wines, making it the perfect spot to unwind after a long day of exploring. Their menu features a range of tasty dishes, from steaks to burgers and loaded fries. We chose the loaded fries and Philly cheese steaks, which were both delicious and satisfying. The loaded fries were topped with ranch, BBQ sauce, crunchy bacon, and melted Mexican blend cheese, creating a mouth-watering explosion of flavor. The grilled scotch fillet steak rolls were piled high with onions and covered in cheese sauce, making for a hearty and satisfying meal.

We also tried the buffalo wings, which were crispy and flavorful, and the happy hour cocktails, which were expertly crafted and refreshing. The bar also offers a great selection of classic Australian beers, and I was excited to try Victoria Bitter for the first time. Overall, the food, drinks, and atmosphere at Iron and River Bar made for a memorable dining experience and a perfect way to cap off a day at the beach.

Everything we ordered there:
  • Victoria Bitter/bottle: $7.5
  • Carlton dry/bottle: $7.5
  • Strawberry daiquiri/happy hour price: $13
  • Buffalo wings/6pc/happy hour price: $1
  • Loaded fries: $16.9
  • Philly cheese steak rolls: $21.9

Whether you're a local or a visitor to Melbourne, a trip to Frankston Beach and Iron and River Bar is a must-do. With its beautiful scenery, delicious food and drinks, and friendly atmosphere, it's the perfect destination for a day trip or a weekend getaway.
