Dear beautiful souls,
When I think about what it means to be a woman, I always come back to that line: “It is literally impossible to be a woman.” That whole Barbie monologue hit me in the gut when the movie came out. Because it’s so true. We’re expected to show up, smile, succeed, care, create, and carry it all, sometimes in heels, sometimes in bikinis, in an office or at an event - often without help, and yes, even while bleeding every month. Being a woman is powerful and beautiful, but it’s also exhausting. And when your period hits, it can feel like life demands even more from you, just when you have the least to give.
My period has always been a struggle. Cramping so bad it knocks the wind out of me, hormonal headaches that turn into full-blown migraines, and that heavy sadness/anger (and any other emotion) that sneaks in and overstays its welcome. Some days, it feels like I’m barely keeping up. For so many of us, whether you’re dealing with endometriosis, PCOS, irregular cycles, or just the classic monthly chaos, it’s more than “just your period.” It’s physical pain, emotional overload, and the pressure to carry on like nothing’s happening.
I usually stick to the same products every month, because let’s be real, experimenting with period care isn’t exactly fun when you’re already feeling rubbish. I had tried period underwear before, but they felt flimsy and too thin to trust. So when I got the chance to try Scarlet, an Australian brand making organic, PFAS-free period underwear, I was curious. Hopeful, even. Also (side note) the packaging was really likeable (bold and cool), which made the whole unboxing feel more like self-care than just another necessity.
This is the MVP. Full coverage, super soft organic cotton, and high absorbency (up to 4 tampons’ worth). At first, I was paranoid and found myself checking every two seconds, but as time went on, I started to really trust them. I wore these on my worst day, the one where everything hurts and nothing fits, and they held up nicely. I didn’t worry about my period, and I didn’t feel like I was wearing a nappy either. These let me focus on surviving the day instead of running to the bathroom every hour. After the first wash, I did notice a little fuzziness on the fabric, which surprised me. But honestly? It’s not a dealbreaker. The comfort and security they offer make it totally worth it.
Rating: 8/10 - reliable, and a game-changer.
I don’t usually wear this type of underwear, but the fit was great, comfortable without digging in. The back offers full coverage, but they still work under lower skirts or pants without showing. It’s a nice mix of comfort and practicality, but I needed some days to make me feel comfortable in it. This is for when you want to feel “normal.” They look and feel like regular undies but still give you that leak-proof protection. I wore it on medium-flow days.
Rating: 8/10 - practical. Great for everyday wear, even if it’s not your usual vibe.
I enjoy wearing G-strings, especially on lighter days when I still want to feel fresh and protected. This one felt a bit snug when I first put it on, not exactly a perfect fit. If you're between sizes, I’d definitely recommend going up. That said, after a few washes and wears, it softened and became much more comfortable. It didn’t feel bulky, and it’s great for spotting, light flow, or even as backup during the dreaded “is this my period or just paranoia?” phase.
Rating: 8.5/10 - sleek, stylish, and surprisingly absorbent. Just be mindful of the sizing.
They’re similar to the Bikini Brief in design, but the high-waisted brief gives you a little extra support and coverage. I usually don’t go for briefs (as mentioned before), but this one really worked for me, and honestly, I liked it better than the Bikini Brief. Plus, it’s got more than just a logo, Scarlet is printed on the waistband along with the logo, giving it that cool, stylish vibe like Calvin Klein models rock.
Rating: 8.5/10 – comfort meets design.
Also I feel like it needs to be mentioned, that Scarlet also has rae: a silent, wireless, sleek heat pad with up to 5 hours of power. I didn’t get to try it this time, but it sounds like the dreamy upgrade my old-school heat pack needs. As someone who basically hugs a hot water bottle for three days straight, I’m definitely adding it to my wishlist.
I received the products mentioned in this post as part of a PR package from Scarlet. However, my opinions are honest and transparent.
Periods won’t ever be fun, especially if you’re managing endo, PCOS, or just the general chaos that comes with being a woman. But feeling a little more comfortable, cared for, and in control makes a massive difference and Scarlet gave me that for some days. Not every piece day or piece was picture perfect, but every one helped me feel a little bit better. And that’s everything. I’ll definitely be using them more. Because even when we’re curled up in pain, we still deserve to feel supported and sometimes, soft cotton and a leak-proof lining are exactly what we need.
With love from B ♥
